چکیده

Balaenoptera acutorostrata (minke whale) is a small and elusive baleen whale that is rarely sighted in the tropical waters of the North Pacific Ocean. During winter and spring, complex sounds called ”boings” are frequently detected around the Hawaiian Islands and other Pacific island regions (Norris et al. 2009 ; Thompson and Friedl 1982 ) . Although boings were described over 45 years ago (Wenz 1964 ) , they were not attributed to minke whales until very recently (Rankin and Barlow 2005 ) . Sightings of Balaenoptera acutorostrata are uncommon in tropical and subtropical waters; however, boings are frequently detected around the Hawaiian Islands using seafloor hydrophones and from hydrophone arrays towed from research vessels. Even today, very little is known about acoustic behaviors and ecology of Balaenoptera acutorostrata. The long-term objective of this research effort is to improve our understanding of the acoustic ecology and behavior of Balaenoptera acutorostrata in their breeding habitat. A primary goal of this study is to compare characteristics of boings recorded in the Hawaiian Islands (central North Pacific) to other regions in the central and western North Pacific (e.g., the Northern Mariana Islands). These results will be used to elucidate stock identities and population characteristics for Balaenoptera acutorostrata in the Pacific Islands. Another goal is to estimate the local abundance of calling Balaenoptera acutorostrata for our main study sites off the Hawaiian Island of Kaua’i and around the Marianas Islands. Finally, we are collecting information Acoustic Ecology and Behavior of Minke Whales in the Hawaiian and Marianas Islands: Localization, Abundance Estimation, and Characterization of Minke Whale “Boings”

The Ecology and Acoustic Behavior of Minke Whales in the Hawaiian and other Pacific Islands

The long-term goals of this research project are to develop and use passive acoustic methods to collect data that will improve our understanding of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in their presumed breeding habitats around the Hawaiian Islands. Ultimately, the new information and methods resulting from this project will provide a better understanding of the ecology and behavior of min...

The Ecology and Acoustic Behavior of Minke Whales in the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands

The long-term goals of this research project are to improve our understanding of the acoustic ecology and behavior of minke whales in the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands. Our specific goals are to develop and use passive acoustic methods that will allow us to survey, track movements, and monitor acoustic (and eventually non-acoustic behaviors) of minke whales. This will provide important informati...

Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) boings detected at the Station ALOHA Cabled Observatory.

Minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in the tropical North Pacific are elusive and difficult to detect visually. The recent association of a unique sound called the "boing" to North Pacific minke whales has made it possible to use passive acoustics to investigate the occurrence of this species in Hawaiian waters. One year of recordings (17 February 2007-18 February 2008) made at the Statio...

Estimating minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) boing sound density using passive acoustic sensors

Density estimation for marine mammal species is performed primarily using visual distance sampling or capture-recapture. Minke whales in Hawaiian waters are very difficult to sight; however, they produce a distinctive “boing” call, making them ideal candidates for passive acoustic density estimation. We used an array of 14 bottom-mounted hydrophones, distributed over a 60 × 30 km area off Kauai...

A Visual Sighting and Acoustic Detections of Minke Whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata (Cetacea: Balaenopteridae), in Nearshore Hawaiian Waters

Minke whales, Balaenoptera acutorostrata (Lacépède), have been considered a rare species in Hawaiian waters due to limited sightings during visual and aerial surveys. However, our research suggests that they are more common than previously considered. In spring 2005, a combined visual-acoustic survey of cetaceans in Hawaiian waters resulted in the sighting of a minke whale within 22 km of Kaua‘...
